With his birth certificate in the form of patent specification DRP 37435, Carl Benz turned his vision of the "car without horses" into reality on January 29, 1886. The world's first automobile is an independent design in which the engine and chassis form an organic unit. With his tricycle design, Benz ushered in a new era of individual mobility. The 190 SL is not a pure sports car, but rather a sporty and elegant vehicle for traveling and everyday use. The roadster was presented in its final form at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1955 and its style was strongly based on the 300 SL racing coupé. With its then newly developed 1.9-liter four-cylinder engine with overhead camshaft, it offered impressive performance on the road. The popularity and success of the 190 SL is reflected in the production figures: between May 1955 and February 1963, 25,881 examples of the touring sports car were produced in Sindelfingen, the majority of which were destined for the US market.
